Seven years before Stephen's arrival, Russell began to break out; sometimes he would inadvertently use telekinesis to move the piano keys. He then began using his powers to cheat at poker games, winning $30,000 from a group of rough characters. When the thugs came to his house looking to recover the money, Russell hid while the thugs broke his father's hand. Russell then left in shame.
